Matcha prices have climbed for years, and for a drink that goes into milk you are paying for a flavour your customer never tastes. We supply cafés, roasters, and retailers with matcha selected in Japan against one test: does it still taste clean in a latte, at a price you can serve every day.
Culinary grade from Nara starts at $120/kg — about $0.36 per latte at 3g. Premium Uji is there for the drink where origin is the point. Every price is published below rather than hidden behind a quote request, because price is usually why you are here.

What you are actually paying for
Matcha price is driven mostly by how long the leaf was shaded, how early it was picked, and how slowly it was milled. Those choices are real and you taste all of them — when the matcha is whisked with water and drunk plain.
Add milk, ice, and any sweetener and most of that difference disappears. This is the single most useful fact in matcha buying, and it is why paying a ceremonial-grade price for latte volume is usually a mistake rather than a splurge. We are not arguing that ceremonial grade is a scam — if you serve matcha whisked plain, buy it. We are arguing that most cafés are not doing that.
Compare on cost per drink, not per kilo
One kilogram makes roughly 333 lattes at 3g. That puts Nara Matcha K53 at about $0.36 a drink, G120 at about $0.84, and Uji Premium at about $1.14. Run the same arithmetic on whatever you buy now — the per-drink gap is usually smaller than people expect and the annual figure much larger. At 40 matcha drinks a day, $0.50 a drink is about $7,300 a year.
How to start
- Order 20g samples of the grades you are considering, and of anything else you are comparing against.
- Make the drink you actually sell, at your usual dose, and taste them side by side on the same day.
- Convert every candidate to cost per drink and decide from there.

- Who chooses the matcha?
- We do, in Japan. NOT THE MATCHA is run by a Japanese company and we buy directly from Japanese producers. Affordable matcha usually raises the question of who actually selected it — this is our answer.
- Is affordable matcha lower quality?
- Price mostly reflects shading time, harvest timing, and milling, and you taste all of that when matcha is whisked plain. Under milk, ice, and sweetener most of it is masked. For latte volume the test that matters is whether it stays clean under milk — which is exactly what we select for.
- How much does it cost per drink?
- One kilogram makes about 333 lattes at 3g. That is roughly $0.36 a drink for Nara Matcha K53, $0.84 for G120, and $1.14 for Uji Premium.
- Can I try it before ordering a full kilo?
- Yes. Every product has a 20g sample at $5–$8 so you can pull shots, steam lattes, and taste it against what you use now before committing to bulk.
- What is your minimum order?
- Tell us the volume you are planning for and we will confirm the minimum and lead time for that product in our reply. We would rather quote you accurately than publish a number that does not match the harvest.
- How do you ship?
- Internationally via DHL. Shipping is quoted with your order based on destination and weight.
- Why is this cheaper than ceremonial matcha?
- Because it is built for a different job. Ceremonial grade is priced to be whisked plain. Ours is culinary and premium grade selected to hold up under milk, ice, and sugar — which is what a café actually serves — so you are not paying a ceremony premium for flavor the latte masks.
