How much should matcha cost per kg? Work in cost per drink instead
The useful number is not price per kilogram, it is cost per drink. A kilogram of matcha makes roughly 333 lattes at 3g per drink, so a $280/kg matcha costs about $0.84 per latte and a $120/kg matcha costs about $0.36. Compare suppliers on that number, not on the sticker price of a tin.
Why price per kg misleads you
Matcha is sold in wildly different formats — 30g tins, 100g pouches, 1kg bags — and the unit price swings enormously between them. A 30g tin at $30 is $1,000 per kilogram. The same matcha in a 1kg bag might be a fraction of that. If you are buying for a café, retail tins are the most expensive possible way to buy the same powder.
Even between bulk suppliers, per-kilogram prices are hard to compare directly, because they bundle different things: packaging, freight, import duty, minimum order sizes. The only number that survives all of that is what it costs you to put one drink in front of a customer.
The arithmetic
A standard matcha latte uses 2–4g of matcha. At 3g, one kilogram yields about 333 drinks. Divide the delivered per-kilogram price by that number and you have your cost per drink.
Using our own published wholesale prices as a worked example, at 3g per drink: Nara Matcha K53 at $120/kg is about $0.36 per drink. Nara Matcha G120 at $280/kg is about $0.84. Uji Premium at $380/kg is about $1.14.
Run the same calculation on whatever you use now. Most cafés are surprised by how small the gap is in absolute terms — and how large it is annually. At 40 matcha drinks a day, a $0.50 difference per drink is roughly $7,300 a year.
What you are actually paying for as the price rises
Higher-priced matcha is generally shaded longer, picked earlier, and milled more slowly. Those choices produce more umami, a deeper green, and a smoother texture — qualities you taste clearly when the matcha is whisked with water and nothing else.
Once you add milk, ice, and sweetener, most of that difference is masked. This is the single most important fact in matcha purchasing, and it is why paying a ceremonial-grade price for latte volume is usually a mistake rather than a splurge.
A sensible way to buy
Decide what the matcha is for before you look at any price. Whisked plain and served as a tea, the grade is the product and you should pay for it. Lattes, smoothies, soft serve, and baking are a different job, and the right matcha is the cheapest one that still tastes clean under milk.
Then sample. Order 20g from two or three suppliers, make the drink you actually sell, and taste them side by side. This costs a few dollars and settles the question better than any spec sheet.
Finally, check what the per-kilogram price includes. Ask about minimum order quantity, lead time, and shipping before you compare anything, because a low headline price with a high minimum and slow lead time may be worse for your cash flow than a slightly higher one.
Where our prices sit
We publish our wholesale prices openly on the wholesale page rather than making cafés request a quote, because price is usually the reason people are looking in the first place. Sample sizes are 20g so you can test before committing to a kilogram.

Frequently asked
- How many matcha lattes does 1kg make?
- About 333 drinks at 3g of matcha per drink, 500 at 2g, and 250 at 4g. Divide your delivered price per kilogram by that figure to get cost per drink.
- What is a reasonable price per kg for café matcha?
- It depends entirely on the job. For matcha served in lattes and smoothies, judge it on cost per drink and on whether it tastes clean under milk. Our own culinary-grade wholesale prices run from $120 to $380 per kilogram depending on the grade.
- Is expensive matcha worth it?
- For matcha whisked plain with water, yes — you are paying for shading, early harvest, and fine milling, and you taste all of it. In a latte those qualities are largely masked, so the same premium buys you much less.
- Why do matcha prices vary so much between suppliers?
- Format is the biggest reason: retail tins carry a far higher per-kilogram price than bulk bags of the same powder. Beyond that, suppliers bundle packaging, freight, and duty differently, and minimum order quantities vary.
